“I was given the opportunity to try coaching, and to be honest, I was slightly skeptical, mostly because I felt that none of my problems were necessarily worthy of professional help. If someone had asked me how things were going for me, I would have said that my life was “just fine.” I thought that to get a benefit from coaching I should at least be a little worse off than I was. But I didn’t want to let an opportunity pass me by, so I took a deep breath and agreed to give it a try… So here I am a few months later, and while I haven’t changed (much), I have found that the way I look at things around me has changed, and the way that I think about things has changed too. I see opportunities around me now that were probably always there, but I felt too stuck, for lack of a better word, to actually notice them. And I have a hopefulness now that I think I have not had since the beginning of the adult part of my life. Life is still challenging and I have to frequently remind myself of the things that I learned with Mari to keep from slipping into my old, familiar patterns, but I am on a better track now overall. I did not necessarily expect that. I have set my sights higher than “just fine.”
One of my hesitations in trying coaching was that I was afraid that I was going to be pushed into doing all these things that I would not have the time to do. It was hard to think about adding one more thing to my schedule! But Mari was very perceptive and very attuned to where I was coming from and what the next reasonable steps could be without my becoming overwhelmed. With her guidance and care, I was able to see that small changes can have a snowballing effect, and I found that the whole experience of sharing this part of my life with Mari to be so positive and worthwhile. Talking with Mari was an inspiration that I hope many, many others will benefit from as well.”
